Healing through music

JOBURG – Find out which local musician is combining business brains with innate talent.

Music is known to heal a broken heart, and Blessing Ngwenya is all about soothing people’s hearts through music.

“In most cases, musicians who studied music tend to make music for musicians but, really, music is for everyone. From omkhulu emakhaya (grandfathers at home), to the young person at a club, we got you,” said Ngwenya.

He is passionate about all things music and art, and wants people to see the beauty in both art and music. He is currently working on his album titled, Perceptions, and said it is all about how he sees the world.

“I chose the name Perceptions because everything in life is what it is, because that’s how we choose to perceive it. The name Perceptions just says that me and my friends are going to tell our story through music, the way we see things. So, in this project, people will get an insight into our perceptions [of] the world, God, relationships, fun and everything in life.”

He is a bassist as well as a self-proclaimed businessman and said doing things yourself as an artist in the music business has benefits.

“The business side of music has sparked great ideas like the Perceptions project. I studied music business to be more informed… and that encouraged me to start my own company. [This means] following all protocols and getting the music recorded and ready for the people. The music industry is a rough dog-eat-dog world. I figured that if I release [my album] under my own label, I can handle the business side of things such as distribution and publishing. Acquiring knowledge of the industry gave me enough to be able to do it on my own.”

However, being a businessman also comes with its own difficulties.

“The challenges that I faced throughout the whole process have been minimal and this is all thanks to the team and my family who have been supportive,” he said.

When commenting on single release dates, Ngwenya said,”This for me is the exciting part, we are releasing the single titled uDolly at the end of November, and we are looking at having the full album launched next year, March.”

For the musician, the hardest part was recording the music, however, with that phase finished, Ngwenya is now focused on a creating a home for the album within South Africans’ hearts and the world at large, as well as doing live performances up until the album launch.
