Street committees can help fight crime

We want the community to work together with the police

Jeppe SAPS, together with Jeppe CPF, is embarking on a recruitment campaign for community members within the Jeppe policing precinct to come on board in fighting against crime.

“We are encouraging people to join patrols as individuals, street committees or neighbourhood watch members.

“We want the community to work together with the police,” said Jeppe CPF chairperson Mr Zola Dambula.

“Jeppe SAPS had a successful joint operation in sectors 1 and 2 with the SAPS two weeks ago. If the community works together with the SAPS it makes it easy for all to understand the problems and crimes the areas experience.

“We are encouraging the community to set up street committees. After forming the committee, communities can invite the department of community safety to train and support the street committee members before handing it over to the CPF and SAPS,” said Mr Dambula.

Mr Dambula said street committees are the key to fighting crime because they can address common crimes like street robberies, house break-ins, theft out of motor vehicles an carjacking.

“Street committees help to identify hot spots and that helps with establishing ways, together with the SAPS, on how to address these issues,” said Mr Dambula.

“I’m humbled and touched by the response of women in particular. To be honest, I’m very proud of the women who came to patrol with us,” said Mr Dambula.

He said women are always the driving force for communities to come together and seeing them being active will encourage other women, men and the youth to join street committees.

Mr Dambula said if there are community members who are interested in forming a street committee they can inform him of their request for assistance in setting up a committee.

Contact him on 076 481 9561.

“We are here to serve the community and the well-being of the community is our number one priority,” said Mr Dambula.
