Mandela Month launched with senior citizens

Mandela Month is a month of selfless giving to the less fortunate.

The ANC’s Joburg Inner City zone 12 launched Mandela Month with senior citizens at Bertha Solomon in Jeppestown on July 1.

The launch was attended by Member of Parliament Ms Joan Fubbs and ANC Deputy Secretary General Jessie Duarte, who was also the guest speaker of the day.

The day was to give gifts to the elderly and express love and appreciation.

“We are members of the community before we are leaders. We live with the rich and poor in our communities and that means we need to care for one another. If you have enough, share with those less fortunate,” said Deputy Secretary Ms Daurte.

Senior citizens, who were the important guests of the day, received blankets which were donated by the South African Chinese community.

“In Chinese culture we always prioritise and respect the elderly. As the Chinese community, we wanted to express our gratitude to all the senior citizens present today. With the gifts, we come to highlight the spirit of late former President Nelson Mandela. He was all about selfless contribution to the community. We respect this great man and we are willing to extend his legacy,” said Xinzhu Li, the director of the ANC’s sub branch in Cyrildene.

Ward 118 ward councillor candidate, Jenny Jianling Wu, said Mandela Month should be used to encourage communities to care and support one another.

“Madiba’s values were to fight injustice, helping people in need and practising reconciliation. Helping those in need is a sign of caring and small actions is a movement towards positive change,” said Mrs Wu.

As July 18 is former President Nelson Mandela’s birthday, Deputy Secretary Ms Duarte also took the opportunity to cut a cake with the senior citizens.
