Uitkoms Home receives a new roof

The home provides residential accommodation and care for pregnant and vulnerable teenage girls who have been referred by the court

“We value enabling others to grow and develop from our staff members to the wider community,” said chairman of the Reatile Group, Simphiwe Mehlomakulu.

The Reatile Foundation donated R244 747 towards repairing the roof of Uitkoms Home for Girls.

Uitkoms was in need of a new roof because it was leaking.

“The roof needed to be repaired and we had no funds to do it ourselves. Reatile came in and repaired the entire roof for us.

“We are happy to receive such a donation. It has really made a difference to the home,” said Uitkoms administration officer, Lauren Da Rocha.

The home held a celebration on Thursday, July 23 together with staff members of Reatile Group.

Uitkoms Home was established in 1944.

The home provides residential accommodation and care for pregnant and vulnerable teenage girls who have been referred to the organisation by various courts.

The home aims to, through various programmes, empower the girls for their eventual reintegration into their communities and where possible to find acceptance from their families and to develop into productive self-sustaining future citizens.

“Reatile Foundation hopes that the previously disadvantaged communities and individuals will take advantage of the opportunities offered to them,” said Mehlomakulu.

He said Uitkoms Home provides a secure home for the girls to have a chance at a normal life and making sure that the home is in good condition to live in was important to them as a foundation.

Uitkoms Home social worker Nomasiko Moyo said the repair of the roof is a relief as the home does not have funds to carry such expenses.

“We appreciate what Reatile has done for the home. We depend on donations and the community and when someone assists us with our needs it’s one thing off the list. We can focus on the well-being of the girls and making sure we provide a secure home for them,” she said.
