Centre makes a difference in disabled people’s lives

St Giles is actively involved in community outreach projects to various charities around the area and as far as Soweto.

Lyn Lessing (67) is a retired nurse who works at the St Giles charity shop three days a week voluntarily.

She believes in giving back.

She retired two years ago after 47 years as an assistant director and clinical tutor at Edenvale Hospital.

“My mother in-law was a visitor and time keeper at St Giles from 1977. She became a resident at St Giles and that is when my involvement started at St Giles. It’s a pleasure helping the residents when they need me and helping the home by working in the shop. The money we make from the charity shop pays for the vegetables and fruit at St Giles,” said Ms Lessing.

The St Giles Association for the Physically Disabled in Kensington provides a caring and protected environment for those who are living with physical disabilities.

The organisation was formed 60 years ago for the physically disabled but finds itself under a lot of financial pressure.

Although they struggle to make money, they share the donations they receive with other organisations.

St Giles is actively involved in community outreach projects to various charities around the area and as far as Soweto.

“We assist disabled people in the community by sharing professional expertise and facilities,” said the organisation’s Ms Dianne Hasapis.
