Hospital congratulates local nurse

Nurse Ramabina is one of Life Health Care Group's Great 100 Nurses for 2016.

Betrams resident and member of the Life Bedford Gardens Hospital nursing team, Nurse Jacobeth Ramabina believes there is more to the profession than taking care of the sick.

She said her job allows her to touch people’s lives on a daily basis.

Nurse Ramabina is one of Life Health Care Group’s Great 100 Nurses for 2016.

The group runs an annual competition that allows nurses from all its hospitals to enter and stand a chance to be in the top 100.

Ms Ravashni Naidoo, the hospital’s nursing manager, said Nurse Ramabina won her place in the top 100 by being a compassionate caregiver and showing leadership qualities.

“She always approach every patient in a friendly, considerate and caring manner, and is commended on a daily basis by patients,” she said.

Nurse Ramabina completed her nursing qualification in 2010 and has been with the hospital ever since.

She said her grandmother inspired her to pursue a career in nursing.

“Although she was not qualified, my grandmother worked at a clinic alongside a midwife and she had such passion for it. I told her that I would, one day, go to school and get a qualification in the profession and make her proud,” she said.

The 45-year-old is married with three boys.

She said because she often works night shifts, she wakes up at 2pm and prepares dinner for her family before leaving home at 5pm.

“My patients are always my priority as far as work is concerned, that is why I like to be punctual so I have enough time for the handover with the day shift nurses,” she said.

Asked what advice she would give to new recruits, Nurse Ramabina said they must always greet patients with a smile.

“Don’t just go through the routine, always make sure you introduce yourself and orientate your patients. Also, always work as a team and if you don’t understand something, ask,” she said.

She said as far as the future is concerned, the top 100 achievement has motivated her to work twice as hard and that bigger things are yet to come from her.

“This day is the biggest highlight so far in my career and celebrating it on Nurses’ Day with my colleagues has been an amazing feeling,” said Nurse Ramabina.
