Motorists easy prey for hijackers – Police

Motorists urged not to park on isolated unsafe streets.

Yeoville SAPS have urged motorists not make themselves easy targets for hijackers.

This follows the increased number of hijackings in isolated and poorly lit areas.

Yeoville SAPS spokesperson, Constable Thabo Malatji said most motorists fell victim while waiting for their friends or sitting in their cars with friends on these streets.

“These people hit when you are not concentrating on your surroundings. As you are concentrating on what you are doing or what is happening in the car, you tend to neglect what is happening outside,” Const Malatji said.

He said police have been urging motorists not to park on isolated streets but some motorists still fail to adhere to this request.

“Some are warned to move from the dangerous spots. Some do move. Others don’t and then they are hijacked moments later,” he said.

“These people are dangerous. They carry firearms. Sometimes their victims sustain injuries during the ordeal. That is why we urge motorists to be aware of their surroundings.

“We urge motorists to value their lives and listen to our call. We will continue monitoring these hot spots but we urge motorists to do their bit,” Cont Malatji said.
