Hijackings a concern for SAPS

She said there were three pairs of new shoes, a passport, a toolbox and a tablet device inside the hijacked car.

The Cleveland SAPS urged motorists to be extra cautious when they park their cars while waiting for people.

This follows two hijackings that took place in Kensington on the evening of Friday, December 4.

The Cleveland SAPS spokesperson, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said in one incident, a couple was sitting in a car along Protea Street shortly after 8pm when they were hijacked.

“Three men in a white VW City Golf stopped next to them. Two of the Golf’s occupants exited the car with firearms, which they pointed at the couple. They ordered the couple out of the car. The suspects forced the couple to lie on the road before fleeing in their car,” said Const Mashakane.

In a separate incident, at about 11pm on the same evening, another hijacking took place on Ocean Street.

Const Mashakane said the man was waiting for his sister when he was hijacked.

The man was sitting in his silver Audi when a white VW Jetta with four occupants stopped next to his car.

“One of the VW Jetta occupants took out a firearm and pointed it at him. The man ordered the victim out of his vehicle. The suspect then drove off in the Audi while his accomplices followed in their VW Jetta,” said Constable Mashakane.

She said there were three pairs of new shoes, a passport, a toolbox and a tablet device inside the hijacked car.

Const Mashakane said motorists should avoid parking outside properties and in isolated places.

“Motorists should avoid parking their cars in isolated areas where there is poor lighting. If you are driving and recognise that there is someone following you, do not enter your home or your destination, just drive on. Drive to a busy place or a police station,” she said.

Const Mashakane urged motorists to not provide lifts to hitch-hikers.
