Community says no to police killings

Hundreds of people took to the streets on Friday to march against the killing of police officers.

Jeppe Hostel residents have denounced the recent killing of police officers.

This was said by the Induna from the hostel, Mr Sphiwe Mhlongo, during the march against police killings on Friday.

“The police officers are our fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers. They are our children. We cannot accept their deaths. Criminals run to the nearest place they can find. These killings made us look like criminals. I can assure you, not all people in the hostel are criminals. Residents living in the Jeppe Hostel are against police killings,” said Mr Mhlongo.

The Hillbrow SAPS Cluster, together with their Community Police Forums (CPF) of the cluster, marched against the killing of police officers in the line of duty.

Earlier this year, Warrant Officer Sibusiso Ndlovu from the Cleveland SAPS and Constable Celimpilo Hlabisa from the Jeppe SAPS, were killed in Jeppestown following a shootout between the police and suspects in separate accidents.

The Jeppe SAPS commissioner, Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo, said the march was to let criminals know the police and the community is fighting back against crime.

“We here to celebrate the lives of our fallen colleagues and to show the criminals that we are not going to retreat. We are pushing forward with our fight against crime. We are celebrating their lives because they died as heroes,” he said.

The Cleveland SAPS station commander, Colonel Bongani Dlamini, thanked the community for the support shown during the march.

“We are encouraged by the support of the community in saying no to the killing of police officers,” he said.
