One suspect arrested after shootout with JMPD

The suspects tried to make a u-turn to face the officer. A shootout ensured between the suspects and the officer.

A suspected hijacker was arrested after a shootout with a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer.

The incident occurred on Thursday, July 9, shortly after 1pm.

The Cleveland SAPS communications officer, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said an off-duty EMPD officer spotted four men in an Audi robbing someone next to Langermann and Protea roads in Kensington.

“The officer followed the suspects.  When they noticed the officer was following them, they sped off. The suspects tried to make a u-turn to face the officer. A shootout ensured between the suspects and the officer. The suspects lost control of the car and collided with a pole. Three suspects were able to flee but one was arrested,” said Const Mashakane.

She said it was later established that the Audi the men were using was reported as hijacked in Florida early this month.
