Joburg East crime hotspots revealed

After speaking to a few residents, it seems crime is still a large concern for many.

Although crime is a general problem in South Africa, it becomes an even bigger problem when it happens on your doorstep.

After speaking to a few residents, it seems crime is still a large concern for many.

The EXPRESS spoke to the SAPS to find out where the crime hotspots are, and what the most common crimes committed in these areas are.

According to Cleveland SAPS, the hotspot areas in Cleveland are:

  •  Hereford Street Malvern, which is popular with drug dealers.

A number of suspects have already been arrested for possession and dealing in drugs. Constable Mpho Mashakane said they are in the process of cleaning up the street until it is drug-free.

  •  The corner of Monmouth and Jules streets in Malvern, where the theft of motor vehicles is rife.

According to Const Mashakane, a number of cars were stolen from the area because of the negligence of the owners.

“Motorists usually park their cars without properly locking the vehicle,” said Const Mashakane.

She also said some truck drivers leave the truck idling and go to the supermarket. Within a few minutes, the vehicle is stolen.

Even those motorists who do lock their vehicles properly, have reported having the door locks tampered with.

Police officers have arrested suspects for possession of car theft equipment near the supermarket at Monmouth Street.

According to the Jeppe SAPS, the crime hotspots in the Jeppe precinct are:

  •  Bez Valley, where there is a problem with car hijackings.
  •  In Jeppestown, car hijackings and robberies are also a problem.

Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, from the Jeppe SAPS, said in Doornfontein, next to the railway station and UJ campus, there have been many reports of robberies. Car theft and car break-ins are also a cause for concern in the Doorfontein area.

  •  Next to the Maboneng, Jeppestown precinct, car theft is a problem.
  •  The Ward 66 councillor, Clr Carlos da Rocha, expressed his concerns about the crime in the Judith Paarl area, saying there are a lot of car hijackings and house break-ins.

“In the last three to four months, house break-ins have been a problem in the Bez Valley and Judith Paarl area,” he said.

A request for comment was sent to the Jeppe Sector 1 chairperson.
