Tip off leads to arrest

The Cleveland SAPS communications officer, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said the team of four men and one woman would drop a package containing money to lure victims into a trap.

Five muthi criminals who were operating in Malvern were arrested on Monday, January 26.

The Cleveland SAPS communications officer, Constable Mpho Mashakane, said the team of four men and one woman would drop a package containing money to lure victims into a trap.

“The suspects would follow the victim into a bank and exit at the same time. One person would walk in front of the victim and pretend to drop a package containing money. The money in the bag would be a mix of South African and Zimbabwean money. Another suspect would appear and suggest going to an isolated location to share the money. This is when the suspect would rob the victim of their belongings,” said Const Mashakane.

The arrests were made after police officers received a tip off regarding the suspects.

“They were arrested just before they could commit another crime and are expected to appear in court soon,” she said.
