CoJ to upgrade Hillbrow

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) will upgrade Hillbrow as part of its urban renewal project.

The CoJ’s communications officer, Mr Nthatisi Madingoane, said the first phase of the project will end in the middle of next year.

The precinct in the immediate vicinity of the Hillbrow Tower will be the first area turned into a pedestrian friendly, safe, urban environment.

“The revitalised Hillbrow will be the core part of a modern, new network of transport and communications connectivity that enables both residents and visitors to access it as a hub. From there, people can explore the rest of the city. The first stage of the project, which is scheduled for completion in the mid 2015, will create economic development opportunities for local artists, tourism and leisure operators, and businesses through the provision of trading spaces in the immediate vicinity of the tower,” said Mr Madingoane.

He added these will includes infrastructure upgrades in the area.

“The rejuvenation of Hillbrow will spread out into all the streets and alleys, through the upgrading of the pavements and the construction of new pavements, landscaping, street furniture, storm water drainage systems and public lighting,” he said.

Mr Madingoane added that after the upgrades, Hillbrow will be placed among the iconic landmarks of a revitalised City of Johannesburg.
