Assaults concern SAPS

The Cleveland SAPS has raised concerns about the increase in common assaults and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Speaking at the Cleveland Community Police Forum (CCPF), Captain Hendrik Kotze, the head of crime intelligence at the station, said these crimes have shown an increase when compared to the same time last year.

“Most of these incidents are domestic-related. Alcohol is a contributing factor to the assaults taking place. People go out and drink alcohol, come home and fight. We are trying to address these crimes,” said Capt Kotze. Colonel Bongani Dlamini, the Cleveland SAPS station commander, said officers are trying to raise awareness about these crimes and other social issues in the community.

People who are victims of domestic violence are also urged to report and open cases.
