Incident-free voting in Yeoville

Yeoville residents came out to exercise their right to vote in the country’s fifth democratic elections on Wednesday, May 7.

Yeoville residents came out to exercise their right to vote in the country’s fifth democratic elections on Wednesday, May 7.

The line of people outside the Yeoville Recreation Centre, from as early as 6am, was an indication that residents had heeded the call to make their mark.

There were two polling stations in the Yeoville area, one at the recreation centre, and the other at Yeoville Boys Primary School.

Voters seemed happy to wait in line for their turn to vote.

“I have been looking forward to it. The different parties have been bombarding us with different manifestos. Now we can make our choices,” said Mr Dan Morake, who arrived an hour after the polling stations opened. The different political parties were in high spirits, singing and dancing in party regalia.

Members of the SAPS and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) were on-hand to keep a close eye on proceedings.

The spokesperson for the Yeoville SAPS, Constable Thabo Malatji, said elections in the area were incident-free. “Everything went well. There were no incidents reported to us from the polling stations. Our members were there for the duration of the elections and even after the polling stations were closed,” said Const Malatji.
