Police concerned about hijackings

The Jeppe SAPS has raised concern following recent car hijackings.

Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, the Jeppe SAPS communications officer, said a vehicle was hijacked in Doornfontein on April 15.

“The victim alleged that he was driving a maxi taxi when he picked up two men at the corner of Rocky and Sherwell streets.

“One of the men pointed a firearm at the driver. The other man jumped in the driver’s seat and drove the vehicle. They dropped the victim off in Maritzburg Road, City Deep,” said W/O Munyai.

The vehicle is a red Toyota Corolla with the registration number BK WO 22 GP.

Two other vehicles were hijacked on April 18. The first car was hijacked in Bertrams.

“The victim alleged that he was sitting in his friend’s meter taxi eating when he was approached by two men who said they wanted transport,” said W/O Munyai.

The men were given a lift and while driving in Voorhout Street, the suspects told the driver to park the vehicle. They demanded money, cellular phones and car keys.

“One of the men stabbed the driver in the head with a knife and pushed him out of the car. They drove off in a white Mazda,” said W/O Munyai. The registration number of the vehicle is LJY 181 GP.

At about 7pm, a white Toyota Corolla was hijacked at the corner of 7th Avenue and 1st Street in Bez Valley.

“The victim alleged he was in the car waiting for his brother when the occupants of a Blue Mercedes Benz stopped in front of him. Three men exited the vehicle and ordered him to get out of his car,” said W/O Munyai. The suspects took his wallet, two cellular phones and cash before they drove off in his car. The car’s registration number is XVT 064 GP.
