Police prepared for election day

Local police are prepared for the country’s national elections on May 7.

Preparing for several months, Colonel Bongani Dlamini, the Cleveland SAPS station commander, said residents can expect to see police officers throughout the precinct.

“We are ready for the elections. There will be full deployment. Our visibility will be high at all voting stations and in other parts of the area,” said Col Dlamini.

Over the past few months the Cleveland SAPS has been discussing safety and trying to prevent conflict among members of different parties.

He called for calm and political tolerance and urged the community to work together.

Last week Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo, the Jeppe SAPS station commander, said police officers under his command are also ready for tomorrow and days after.

“We will be fighting crime as we usually do and will be at all the voting stations. We have put measures in place to bring about safety for people and if there are voting-related problems we will attend to it,” he said.

People are urged to report crime including intimidation, threats and all other serious crimes related to the national elections to their local police stations.
