Join the Somerset Road Security Forum

A neighbourhood watch or street security forum is an effective way to reduce crime and residents are urged to join or start these initiatives.

This was stated by Miss Doreen Fosse, the secretary of the recently formed Somerset Road Security Forum (SRSF), in Kensington.

She urged people to join the forum.

“We live in a beautiful neighbourhood. As residents, we have a duty to keep our area safe so that we can enjoy the tree-lined streets and parks. That is why we need a group of dedicated residents to join the Somerset Road Security Forum or neighbourhood watch. It is a community driven platform that ensures effective and quick response to criminal activity and ensures that members of the community are empowered with information via well-developed communication channels,” said Miss Fosse.

This forum was started following several crimes in Somerset Road.

However, a meeting held recently was not well attended.

Residents who attended the meeting were given a rundown of crime in the area and other important information which included telephone numbers to keep handy in case of an emergency.

A committee was elected. Mr Daniel Schultz is the chairperson, Mr Graham Sharp is the vice-chairman and Miss Fosse the secretary.

“The SRSF needs every member of Somerset Road to be involved. There are no criteria and we can all do our bit. An effective neighbourhood watch will help in regaining areas from criminals. Do not leave your safety and that of your family up to someone else. We are here to be the eyes and ears of the police. We are not taking over the work they do but we recognise we can do an immense amount to ensure the SAPS uses its resources to maximum efficiency. Please join the security meetings so that you can be a part of the community and be kept up to date. You can make a huge difference,” said Miss Fosse. –

The SRSF will soon start its Know Your Neighbour initiative.

The SRSF hopes to obtain information, such as people’s names and contact details, from each house in Somerset Road and those homes adjoining the street. These details will be correlated and redistributed to all participants.

Members will be going door-to-door to inform residents about their plans.
