Local tournament a success

16 local soccer teams met two weeks ago to compete in a tournament organised among themselves. Each round played was a knock-out round. Matches were played until only four teams remained.

April 13 saw the top four playing the semi-finals to progress into the finals, which were played on the same day, at Rhodes Park in Kensington.

The Rangers beat AmaEleven 4-0 to make it to the finale. Diski Nine-Nine and Rangers met in the finals to play for the grand prize of R5 000.

Rangers scored the first goal and Diski equalised shortly before half time.

Five minutes into the second half, Diski Nine-Nine scored a goal and were leading. But as the game continued, the opposition managed to scored a goal and level matters. When the whistle blew for full time, the score was still level, so the match progressed to a penalty shootout. The final score was 6-7, in favour of the Rangers. Diski Nine-Nine walked away with R2 000 for coming second. The other two teams that lost in the semi-finals received R500 each. There are plans to continue playing local tournaments after the Easter holidays.
