Sharing life through poetry

The number of children attending the Proud Community Youth Development project is increasing.

The project aims to provide youngsters with a platform to express themselves through poetry, while gaining valuable knowledge and life skills at the same time. Children meet at the Rhodes Park Library.

There, the children are encouraged to read and write as much as possible. During the session on April 12, children were visited by MFelicia Marion, a gospel singer, Dineo Phadimenyane, who works with homeless children, Mmakgari Dabotha, a poet from the Maibwharelo Dabotha Foundation and Shaheed Ndongeni, a writer from Anawanti.

Poems compiled by the children for this session left some of the attendees in tears.

“They are so young and have so much potential,” said Ms Faradiba Morton, one of the project founders.

The project was started by her and Ms Glenrose Ndlovu, who is an activist against human trafficking.

For more information on the project, contact Ms Morton on 074 330 1587.

In support of the project, the EXPRESS will be publishing poems written by the children once a month under the banner, Poetry Empowers.
