Jeppe police searching for suspect

The suspect told them the money will disappear from their bank accounts if they do not withdraw it.

The Jeppe SAPS is searching for a man captured on video footage at a Nedbank ATM in Braamfontein on December 20.

A man alleged he was walking on Albertina Sisulu Road, in Betrams, when he met a man who was going in the same direction.

“While they were walking, without talking to each other, another man passed between them and smeared something that looked like vaseline on the victim and walked away. The man who was walking with him pointed to a white Toyota Avanza with the registration number CF 32 CF GP and told him it was a police car,” said Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, the Jeppe SAPS communications officer.

One of the passengers of the vehicle showed the man a police appointment card and asked him what happened.

The man explained and he pointed out who had smeared the vaseline on him.

“The ‘police officers’ went to the man who smeared vaseline and put him in the car. They then drove to the Hillbrow police station. On arrival, the man who showed the victim a police appointment card exited with the suspect and said he is going to lock him up in the cells. He came back alone after five minutes. When back in the car, he asked the victim and the other man how much they had in their bank accounts. The victim said he had R15 000 and the other man said he had R22 000. The suspect told them the money will disappear from their bank accounts if they do not withdraw it. They were told they must go to the bank to withdraw the money and deposit it again,” said W/O Munyai.

They went to the ATM and drew the money.

The suspects then told the men to hand over the money so that they could spray it with muthi to remove evil spirits.

The victim refused and the driver of the vehicle drew a firearm and pointed it at him.

He told him to hand over the money, otherwise he would be shot. The suspects assaulted the man, took his money and dropped him off. He then went to the Brixton police station to open a case.
