Man rescues pup and mother

The mother was anaesthetised and her wounds treated by the hospital team.

A dog and her pup are now in safe hands thanks to Mr Leon Digovich.

Mr Digovich, from Alberton, saw a dog and her pup running in a busy road near the Denver Hostel on November 11.

“Fearing for the animals’ lives, he stopped and picked the pup up. The mother immediately came over to him and allowed herself to be picked up as well. He noticed an open wound around the mother’s neck and immediately brought the dogs to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL),” said Inspector Rulof Jackson.

The mother was anaesthetised and her wounds treated by the hospital team.

“It is suspected the mother had been tied up with wire but broke free because of the thunderstorm the night before. This resulted in her and her pup wandering in the street the following day,” said Insp Jackson.

The mother and pup are doing well.

“We wish to thank the public for their empathy, their support and for assisting us in cases such as these. Without the quick-thinking of Mr Digovich, the outcome of this particular case may not have had such a happy ending. It is also a lesson for pet owners who tie their dogs up with wire. Over a period of time the wire can penetrate the skin around the neck due to the inflexibility of the wire. This can subsequently lead to chronic infection. This would obviously cause the animal extreme pain and distress and would be tantamount to being slowly strangled,” said Insp Jackson.
