Second Street fencing not stolen – JMPD

Ms Stacey Haahjem, pleaded with council to secure the open area which is posing a safety threat to people in Second Street.

Fencing at a bridge in Second Street, Bez Valley, was never stolen but instead fell into the Jukskei River.

Sergeant Desmond De Mackett, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) commander for ward 66, said the JMPD visited the site recently because of complaints received about the “stolen fencing”.

The EXPRESS previously published an article in which Bez Valley resident, Ms Stacey Haahjem, pleaded with council to secure the open area which is posing a safety threat to people in Second Street.

She believed thieves stole the fencing, poles and braces. Ms Haahjem requested the fencing be replaced on numerous occasions.

The EXPRESS forwarded an enquiry relating to Ms Haahjem’s concerns to authorities.

At a recent Cleveland Community Police Forum (CCPF) meeting, Sgt De Mackett said, “We went to the bridge to investigate. From the street it looks like the fencing was stolen. But we checked the area and discovered the fencing and poles had fallen into the Jukskei River. What we also found was a tunnel below Second Street. We believe criminals could be using this tunnel as a hide-out. We are working with the Johannesburg Roads Agency to reconstruct the fencing.”
