Covid-19 – Councillors call for calm in time of Covid-19 pandemic

“It is a time for us to all stand together and unite in the fight against the virus as best we can.”

As more cases of Covid-19 are reported each day, Edenvale ward councillors have called upon the community to unite and show true Edenvale community spirit.

In a joint response to the NEWS, councillors Heather Hart (Ward 18) and Bill Rundle (Ward 19) urged the community to work together.

According to the pair, the declaration of a national state of disaster concerning Covid-19 was a decision that was not taken lightly.

They said the decision was made only after due consultation with all stakeholders, including leaders of all opposition political parties.

The declaration provides the government with enough time to release extraordinary funding and the president to take far-reaching decisions without delay.

“Covid-19 is the biggest crisis to face South Africa since the advent of HIV/Aids and needs to be treated with all due precaution and seriousness.

“It is a time for us to all stand together and unite in the fight against the virus as best we can.”

The councillors said the community must not panic.

“It is even more important that we not create panic by spreading fake news, which has now been declared a criminal offence.

“With the ease and speed of social media in spreading ‘the news’ let’s all be ultra-responsible by not spreading information that has not been certified,” said the pair.

Rundle and Hart said during the pandemic community members must look after themselves and their families.

“Take the precautions of self-isolation if required, social distancing and highest hygiene standards of washing hands with soap frequently and regularly.

“Community members should heed the advice provided by health authorities in the weeks to come.”

Hart and Rundle said as they receive official information, they will share it with residents in their ward.

“What is equally important is to look out for those who cannot look out for themselves.

“Assist with soap, transport, shopping or in any way that we can and remember that we as councillors are also here to help if you know of people in need.”

Rundle and Hart said their thoughts and prayers are with all those who have already been infected or whose families have been affected and who have already lost loved ones.

“We are all no doubt feeling overwhelmed by the enormity of the threat to ourselves and our families and by not knowing how long this threat will remain.

“Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require guidance or assistance.”
