Burning chaos in Plantation Road
On-site, employees arrived obliviously to find their work stations in ashes.
Business owners at National Luna in Plantation Road, Eastleigh, are picking up the pieces after one of its buildings was gutted by fire in the early hours of November 22.
The destroyed building contained a manufacturing block with tools and a few company vehicles.
DEMS media liaison Eric Maloka said the company’s alarm was activated and the fire was reported at 4am.
“The cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage. There were no casualties reported at the scene.”
According to Maloka, Edenvale Fire Station was the first to respond at 4am.
“Edenvale was backed by Bedfordview and Primrose fire departments. We responded as a district, ”said Maloka.
One of the directors of the business, Derek Burmeister, said he received a call from an employee who was onsite at 4am.
“The building was used to manufacture 12 volt refrigerators for camping purposes.”
“We are all in shock and the reality of what we have lost has not set in yet,” said Burmeister.
Other divisions of the business were not affected by the fire.
“We will look at rebuilding and restructuring the building,” said Burmeister.
