SAPS warns against truck hijackings this festive season

With festive season looming, Bedfordview SAPS warns the community about truck hijackings.

Due to a recent truck hijacking on the N12 , Bedfordview SAPS urges business owners and company fleet managers to be vigilant this coming festive season.

Capt André de Jager, the Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, said the Bedfordview community needs to take note of criminals who might take the opportunity this festive season to commit crimes such as business robberies and truck hijackings.

He said criminals are after stock, which is on route to be delivered or on the premises.

“We had a case recently where a six-ton truck carrying liquor was hijacked by suspects in Meadowdale close to the N12. These suspects were posing as metro members,” said de Jager.

He said the truck was later recovered with the stock missing.

De Jager said that no suspects have been arrested yet.

“With the festive season drawing closer the demand for items such as food, appliances and liquor will increase. Please let your staff and clients know to be extra vigilant,” said de Jager.

He added warehouses and businesses storing these types of goods also need to take extra precautions to avoid being targeted by criminals.

“It would make a difference if businesses add extra security this festive season and businesses should avoid trucks leaving their premises at night,” said de Jager.
