Hand Hygiene Day at Fairsands Primary School

Nadine Nunan, the Scientific Affairs & Education manager, said effective hand washing can prevent the transmission of many illness-causing bacteria and viruses, as hands are the most common conduit for germs.

3M Medical Solutions, in partnership with Netcare Linksfield, hosted a Hand Hygiene Day at Fairsands Primary School on August 23.

Nadine Nunan, the Scientific Affairs and Education manager at 3M Medical Solutions Division, said the purpose of this initiative is to educate Grade R and One learners and to raise awareness of the importance of hand hygiene in preventing the spread of disease at grassroots level.

“In our homes and communities, as well as within healthcare facilities, good hand hygiene is one of the most important means of preventing the spread of infectious illnesses,” said Nunan.

She said effective hand washing can prevent the transmission of many illness-causing bacteria and viruses, as hands are the most common conduit for germs.

“Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly reduces your chances of becoming ill or spreading infections to other people, thereby also reducing the need for antibiotics.

“This, in turn, contributes towards the global effort to curb antibiotic resistance, as overuse of antibiotics makes these medicines less effective,” said Nunan.
