New blood needed at Child Welfare

“New committee members, who are willing to do the work and help improve the lives of children, are desperately needed.”

Child Welfare SA Edenvale and Bedfordview is looking for hard-working and dedicated community members to join its committee.

Established in the mid-1950s to supplement and support the work of the then National and Provincial Departments of Social Welfare, Child Welfare focused on helping families in need.

Over the years, as society changed, Child Welfare was appointed as the official NGO to handle social welfare matters.

The organisation’s work is mainly among families and children ‘at risk’, referred to the organisation by the SAPS, teachers, the courts, schools or parents.

The chairperson of the Edenvale branch, Pieter Le Roux, said the organisation caters for the communities of Edenvale, Bedfordview and the surrounding areas.

He said many people are unaware that the branch assists families in Bedfordview.

“New committee members, who are willing to do the work and help improve the lives of children are desperately needed,” said Pieter.

By attracting new committee members Pieter hopes new life will be breathed into the organisation.

As Child Welfare is an NGO, it relies heavily on donations from the community and businesses.

General donations it requires include:

• Painting of the offices, boardroom, classrooms, external buildings and carport supports.

• Groceries.

• Office stationery.

• Petrol vouchers.

• Pinocchio Educare Centre sponsorship – R900 per child per month.

• Toiletries.

• Cleaning detergents.

• Sponsorship for social workers advertisements – approximately R1 000 per month.
