#MandelaMonth: 67 Blankets is on a secret scarf mission

Knitting champions around the country knitted and crocheted beautiful scarves to distribute on July 9.

Mandela Month is here and the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day team was ready for the annual Secret Scarf Mission.

Knitting champions around the country knitted and crocheted beautiful scarves to distribute on July 9.

This nationwide initiative has been running for six years and has proved to be hugely successful.

The handmade scarves are made with love to keep people warm in winter and are always distributed in July in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

Thousands of scarves were draped around trees and poles and hung for the taking by passersby in need.

A note was attached to each scarf that read: “I am not lost. If you are cold and need me, please take me,” to give those in need a clear conscience to keep the scarves.

Community members are welcome to assist the various venues in tying the scarves to trees and poles.

Scarves were distributed around the Johannesburg Zoo Lake, Edenvale, Norwood and Lenasia.
