Goju Kai athletes to compete in Southern Africa WKF Karate Championships

The tournament was held in Swakopmund, Namibia, from May 23 to 25.

Jesse Sim, Kaylee Naidoo and Mikayla Alves from Goju Kai Crawford Italia karate school in Bedfordview have recently been awarded South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc)-approved Protea colours for all-styles karate.

This comes after they were selected to represent the South African all-styles karate team in the World Karate Federation (WKF), where they will participate in the Region 5 Southern Africa WKF Karate Championships.

The tournament was held in Swakopmund, Namibia, from May 23 to 25.

“Jesse, Kaylee and Mikayla will compete against the best athletes from Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Angola.

“All three athletes were selected for the Protea team based on their current national ranking within WFK.

“Although Jesse and Kaylee have had a number of national Protea call-ups, it is the first time for Mikayla and she is very excited to be part of the national team,” said coach Russell Sim.

Russell said all three athletes have prepared rigorously for this event, including competing at the recent Arnold Classic Africa festival in Sandton, where all three took multiple.
