R8 000 raised for children in need

Edenvale Lions Club raised approximately R8 000 to assist children diagnosed with cancer.

The fund-raiser on April 7 at the Keg and Beagle was organised by the Edenvale Lions to assist Kids Kicking Cancer.

It saw community members, fellow Lions from Alberton and representatives from the organisation attend.

Those in attendance were treated to live music by Andrea Giglio, a pub quiz and a demonstration from the children from Kids Kicking Cancer.

Edenvale Lions member and organiser of the event Margie Kienast said the club was extremely appreciative of the support from the community.

“The event went fabulously well, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”

Doctor Richard Friedman, chairperson of Kids Kicking Cancer, said the organisation was very grateful to be approached by the Lions.

“There is a great need to support children diagnosed with cancer,” said Friedman.

He said children involved in the organisation are referred to it by public hospitals.

It teaches children, free of charge, how to use martial arts as therapy to reduce their pain.

Some of the techniques include breath work, meditation and traditional karate movements.

“We started in October and are at 10 South African hospitals, by the end of the year we hope to be at 19,” said Friedman.

Karate instructor, fifth dan and former South African champion Moses Sebopa said he was excited to be invited to the event.

“I enjoy working with children at the various hospital.

“We also visit children at home and assist them if they cannot visit a hospital.”
