Chef Steve gave us his top 10 must-have items in the kitchen to ensure dinner is ready when loadshedding strikes.

• Light source: Make sure you have some form of lighting handy, i.e. torches and candles.

• Pre-cooked food: Keep some pre-cooked food in the fridge, such as roast chicken and leftover Sunday roast.

• Thermos flask: If you know when the power will be out in your area, prepare beforehand. Boil water and store in a thermos flask.

• Salad ingredients: Have ingredients in your fridge you can make a salad with.

• Canned food: Keep some processed meat, such as tinned ham, tuna or salmon. These are great for salads and on sandwiches and they have a longer shelf-life.

• Gas cylinder: Ensure you have a gas cylinder with gas so you are able to cook even when the power is out.

• Charcoal and firelighters: Loadshedding can be the perfect excuse to have a braai on a weekday. You can braai some meat and invite a few friends over.

• Snacks: Have some biscuits, biltong, dry wors, etc. These are great for snacking on.

• Bread: Always have bread.

• Keep a level head. Don’t panic. There’s always the option of going out for dinner or visit family and friends who have power.
