EMPD tackles drugs in Edenvale

“Minimum force was applied after the suspect showed signs of resisting arrest.”

Members of EMPD’s Drug Enforcement Unit have arrested an Edenvale businessman on charges of resisting arrest, possession of and dealing in illicit substances.

The arrest of the 45-year-old foreign national was made along Van Riebeek Avenue on January 30.

Acting EMPD spokesperson, Kobeli Mokheseng, said after entering the suspect’s business, officers noticed a white substance stuffed between a six-pack of two-litre water bottles on display.

He said the suspect could not provide clear answers about the substance to the officers and was subsequently arrested.

“Minimum force was applied after the man showed signs of resisting arrest,” said Mokheseng.

Thirteen ziplock bags of crystal meth, 11 pieces (rocks) of cocaine, one ziplock bag of Cat and R560 in notes were found at the premises and in his possession.

Mokheseng said the drugs are believed to be worth R6 000.

He said while taking the suspect to Edenvale Police Station, officers realised the man was arrested last year on charges of possession and dealing in illicit substances.

On the same day, members of the Drug Enforcement Unit operating in Springs arrested another foreign national.

He was found in possession of two expired asylum seekers documents, one ziplock bag of Cat, one ziplock bag containing crystal meth, one packet of dagga, 11 Mandrax tablets and R1 500.

Mokheseng said the man attempted to bribe officers with the money before being arrested.

The suspect was charged for possession and dealing in illicit substances, bribing officers and because he is an illegal immigrant.

Mokhesheng said the suspects will appear in the respective magistrate’s courts soon.
