Local swimmers head to Nelspruit to train

While at the camp, ESP's swimmers learned they need to be driven and hungry to succeed and win.

Five ESP Academy swimmers had a whole new world opened to them when they joined an annual Nelspruit training camp held in January.

Organiser Dean Price invited Annebel van Wyk, Bernelee Doster, Kyle McKenzie, Clayton Malaza, Tambai Dutiro to attend.

Over 100 swimmers attended the camp which gave swimmers the opportunity to watch and learn from some of South Africa’s top swimmers such as Ayrton Sweeney, Douglas Erasmus and Erin Gallagher.

The swimmers take part in the training camp as well as a gala.

The swimmers had two sessions of ice baths per day and training afterwards to teach them how to swim under different conditions.

While at the camp, ESP’s swimmers learned to be driven and hungry to succeed and win.

At the end of the camp, a Grand Prix gala was held, ESP Academy’s results are as follows:

• Van Wyk was the most improved swimmer, achieved seven personal bests, two third positions and two fourth positions.

• Doster swam an SA junior nationals qualifying time in the 200m backstroke in a time of 2:34:60, she swam six personal bests and took six top positions.

• McKenzie swam one personal best, took several top eight positions and placed fourth in the 400m individual medley.

• Malaza swam a brilliant 100m breaststroke in a personal best time of 1:12:33.

• Dutiro did well and swam within one second of his personal bests.
