UPDATE: Longmeadow shooting suspect dies

One of two suspects injured in a shoot-out with police along Longmeadow Boulevard yesterday has died.

The man, aged 40, was rushed to hospital under police guard in a critical condition but died of his injuries shortly after his arrival at the hospital.

Sebenza SAPS Spokesperson Sergeant Sharon Tsotsotso said the men were travelling in a vehicle which was hijacked in December from the North West.

It is believed the suspects could be connected to a number of bank following robberies.

“Informants told the Alex SAPS Intelligence Task Team about the hijacking and a white polo was placed under observation in January. Earlier today, informants told police that the car was moving from Tembisa to Johannesburg with false number plates,” Sgt Tsotsotso said.

She added that SAPS Task Team members followed the suspects.

“When officers were noticed by the suspects the men opened fire on officers. Officers returned fire, injuring two of the suspects.”

Another vehicle travelling with the suspects was able to escape. SAPS officers have recovered two unlicensed firearms at the scene.

Tsotsotso said the suspects will be charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, attempted murder and possession of a hijacked vehicle.
