Motorist questions lack of staff at Edenvale Drivers Licence Centre

“People who had been at the office since it opened started to get agitated when they saw this.”

Edenvale resident Ron McCormick has raised concerns about an apparent lack of adequate staff at Edenvale Drivers Licence Centre.

McCormick said when he visited the centre on September 11, it appeared that the centre was short-staffed.

He arrived at 7.30am to renew his driver’s licence and left at about 12 pm.

“All of the equipment such as eye testing machines and fingerprint pads were there, but there was not enough staff to man it all,” said McCormick.

He believes there were also fewer cashiers than usual.

“I believe that if there had been more staff it would have been a quicker process. It was quite frustrating.”

In addition to the lack of staff, McCormick believes the centre is not as user-friendly as it should be.

He said there is very limited information about what documents motorists need to bring to renew their licence.

“While standing in the queue, me and a few other motorists noticed community members just walking past the queue and being helped.”

“People who had been at the centre since it opened started to get agitated when they saw this.”

He said an employee explained that there was an online booking system for a drivers’ licence renewals which could be used to make an appointment.

“There was only an A4 piece of paper that explained this information. I believe it should have been on a bigger notice board.”

McCormick said this was the first time he had had a bad experience at the centre since he moved to Edenvale over thirty years ago.

A request for comment was sent to the City of Ekurhuleni on September 27.
