Convicted robber Daniel Musawenkosi, who escaped from police custody in January, was arrested for attempted murder and arson for allegedly setting fire to his girlfriend’s house.

Sebenza SAPS spokesperson Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso said the 38-year-old was re-arrested on September 26 by trolling officers on Major Miller Avenue, Croydon.

Tsotsotso said before the fire Musawenkosi was wanted by Sebenza SAPS for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm related to a domestic violence case.

“Musawenkosi’s girlfriend, her son and helper were woken up by the sound of a window breaking. The woman realised her bedroom was on fire,” said Tsotsotso.

“She accused Musawenkosi of starting the fire and she said he had previously made threats against her,” Tsotsotso said.

“The threats started after she opened the case of assault GBH against him on September 2.”

Tsotsotso said the trio escaped the burning property unharmed.

“While patrolling, the area officers saw an individual climb over a wall and run away from the fire towards a parked car,” said Tsotsotso.

When the vehicle was stopped officers found the suspect and a driver in it.

“The driver claimed to be from a taxi service,” said Tsotsotso.

The two men were taken back to the girlfriend where Musawenkosi was identified by the woman.

Tsotsotso said he was taken to Sebenza Police Station where he was detained.
