Edenvale Post Office forced to close its doors after illegal strikers descend on the branch

Edenvale’s Post Office has temporarily closed its doors following an illegal strike by postal workers.
Spokesperson of the South African Post Office Johan Kruger said individuals occupied the branch on July 2
The workers were employed at other branches.
Kruger said the decision to temporarily close the branch was made to protect customers, their property and employees.
He said it is not yet known why the workers held the strike.
“The strike was not condoned by the trade unions in the post office,” said Kruger.”
“The workers’ actions are regarded as illegal and the matter is being investigated.”
Linda McKenzie, manager of the Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID) said she was shocked when the striking workers arrived.
“We received no notification about the strike,” said McKenzie.
“If ECID has been made aware of it, provisions would have been made.”
Kruger said the SA Post Office and recognised trade unions only started discussions today (July 3).
“Any industrial action taken would be premature,” said Kruger.
While the Edenvale Post office is closed community members can make use of the Greenstone, Edenglen and Dowerglen post offices.
“The Edenvale branch will reopen as soon as the situation is regarded as safe,” said Kruger.
