Empowering local learners

“When I told my mom what we were learning at school she was very impressed.”

With the hopes of empowering young women, a teacher has started an initiative to teach valuable life skills to local learners.

Physical education teacher at Holy Rosary High School (HRS) Coreen Walstra recently taught Grade 11 learners how to change a car tyre.

Coreen said the decision to start the initiative came after she was approached by learners wanting to learn something new.

“It’s something different so I thought it would be a good idea to try to teach learners skills they can use in life,” explained Coreen.

Grade 11 learners Kaitlyn Rusch, Eliyah Di Blasio and Derren Schoombie said they have all enjoyed the initiative so far.

“It was fun to learn how to change a tyre,” said Eliyah.

“It is good to know how to do it in case we get stuck on the side of the road one day.”

Although learners have only been taught how to change a tyre, Coreen said the learners are interested in learning more.

Learners hope to be taught how to do CPR, taxes and how to defend themselves.

“When I told my mom what we were learning she was very impressed,” said Derren.

Coreen said HRS is one of a few schools in the area which has started a programme like this.

In the near future, Coreen together with HRS hopes to expand and teach various life skills to the learners in other grades.

Some of the topics which may be covered include people skills and how to apply for an ID.
