JUST IN: Edenvale SAPS to investigate Don Mattera Child and Youth Care Centre

“These are serious allegations. An investigation into the matter is underway” - Edenvale SAPS station commander.

Edenvale SAPS started an investigation into Don Mattera Child and Youth Care Centre after it was made aware of allegations of underage sex, rape and sodomy at the centre.
The allegations were brought to the attention of Colonel Steven Moodley, Edenvale SAPS’ station commander, on March 12 by Member of Parliament Mike Waters and Ward 19 Clr Bill Rundle.

“These are serious allegations. An investigation into the matter is underway,” said Moodley.

Captain Jean Olckers, spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, said once the police receive a sworn statement, a case will be opened.

Mbangwa Xaba, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Social Development, said the department is unaware of any investigation into the centre.
“We are only aware of the allegations raised by the Democratic Alliance and that is no basis for investigation,” said Xaba.

“MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza recently visited the centre and requested that a report about the centre be compiled.”
Xaba said the MEC specifically requested information on why children were allowed to abscond from the centre.
