Sergeant Jacob Mashile, the head of Edenvale SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit, provided crime prevention tips.

“It is important to provide domestic workers with security tips because they are our eyes and ears,” said Mashile.

He said when a residential robbery does occur, domestic workers are often the first to come in contact with criminals.

Mashile urged domestic workers to be alert at all times.

He provided the following tips:

• To never answer questions about the home’s security and its residents’ routines.

• To lock all windows and doors when at home alone.

• To be vigilant while hanging out washing or taking out dustbins.

• To be wary of unknown people in the neighbourhood.

• To know where the panic button is.

• To know the local contact numbers of the police and local security companies.

“If someone has broken into the house, make sure you can contact the police and your employer,” added Mashile.

To report crime or suspicious activity, phone 10111, 08600 10111 or the local sector numbers on 071 675 6841/2/3/4.
