Michelle Ashburner, one of the organisers, said the aim of the market was to empower and impart business skills to the youth.

She said this was the second market the Youth Radio was hosting and they hope to have more in future.

“We host such markets because we want the youth to interact with other business people. The youth can go to our website and check what they can do because there are so many options out there.

“The stalls at our markets are owned by young people, who offer different services and products. Skills development is very important to us and we want to empower the youth for the future,” said Michelle.

She said the money they make at the markets goes back into growing the market.

Pamela Chetty of Evergreen Alejandro said they partnered with the Youth Today Radio because children have a lot of influence in their homes.

“Evergreen Alejandro has developed a unique recycling and onsite programme dedicated to enhancing recycling awareness. We collect materials and recycle in a responsible manner.

“Children are involved in many decisions that are taken in their homes. Why not involve them in recycling? If we teach them about recycling while they are young, they can share that knowledge at home and influence other people to become involved in recycling,” said Pamela.

She said if children are taught about recycling at a young age, they will grow up with the habit and help keep the environment clean.

16-year-old entrepreneur, Zoe Jacobs won the best-themed stallholder and became the winner of a free stall at the next CocaCola Youth Today Flea market.
