Data centre cable thieves bust

Executive Mayor Clr Herman Mashaba said the arrests were the result of a tip-off received from a member of the public.

Members of the SAPS, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the City of Joburg’s Group Forensic Investigation Department arrested three suspects following a break-in at the city’s data centre in Braamfontein recently.

Executive Mayor Clr Herman Mashaba said the arrests were the result of a tip-off received from a member of the public.

“Two of the suspects were arrested in Tembisa on November 16. The other suspect was arrested on November 17,” Mashaba said.

“I suspect the break-in was the result of an inside job,” he added. “Judging from the way the suspects gained access to the building, there were no signs of forced entry from the door they used.

“The suspects made off with copper cables estimated to be worth around R2-million.”

“We have since recovered the stolen cables at a scrapyard in Devland,” said Mashaba. “The city will engage with law enforcement authorities to ensure that we continue the investigation and get to the bottom of this matter.”
