‘Extreme cruelty’ to animals upsets motorist

EDITOR – On Wednesday, November 15, an accident blocked the highway for four hours.

This was quite something, especially when you see a truck full of pigs being transported in the heat. They were on top of each other and were fighting with each other.

It was distressing to see this.

They were in the same place for four hours. I was next to the truck when I left to go to Sandton, and two and a half hours later when I returned to work, they were still there but this time, I saw them fighting with each other.

I took the Barbara Road turn-off and the truck continued straight – more than likely in the direction of the Gilloolys Interchange.

I called the NSPCA, and they in turn called the Kempton and the Edenvale SPCAs.

Apparently, they dispatched vehicles to look for the animals but could not find the truck because the communication given to them was totally misunderstood and they were looking at a different place on the highway.

There was chaos because the highway was blocked in all directions.

I followed up with Edenvale SPCA the following day only to hear that they couldn’t find them.

No-one else called to give the SPCA any information.

I cannot believe what has happened to our society – we are so engrossed in our own lives and do not care about others.

Animals do not have a voice to speak, but we do. We need to do something.

I cannot believe that the cars that were next to and behind this truck did not see what was happening.

Do we only know how to eat pork? Don’t we care where it comes from, how animals are treated, even if it is in their last few hours?

Shame on us!

The SPCA informed me that October/November/December are peak seasons, so the pastoralists and farmers are sending the animals to the slaughterhouses but they should only do so in the early morning and no later.

If caught, they will be fined.

Can the public do something nice this year, and call if they see trucks full of animals on the highway later in the day.

We need to put a stop to this!

If anyone did see anything, please call the Edenvale SPCA and speak to Jade. We are looking for more information to assist us in tracking the truck.

Soula Bitzo-Dean.
