RECOVERED: Stolen copper cable found, two arrested

The individuals were arrested after the EMPD Cable Anti-Theft Unit acted on information received about the theft.

Two suspects were arrested on October 17 in connection with the theft of a 1km cable worth about R170 000 from an Edenvale business.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), said the cable was stolen from Ekurhuleni Electricity Stores on High Street on October 15.

The individuals were arrested after the EMPD Cable Anti-Theft Unit acted on information received about the theft.

“The metro police officers reacted swiftly and followed up on the tip-off. They cornered the suspects’ vehicle as it was about to enter a scrapyard,” said Kgasago

“We believe they were about to sell the cable when they were arrested. EMPD recovered the kilometre long cable which comprised of 185mm x3 core and 120mm x2 core.

“Staff from the electricity store positively identified the copper which had concealed barcodes on the cable,” said Kgasago.

He said the suspects, aged 26 and 37, were detained at the Edenvale Police Station on charges of possession of stolen copper cable.
