‘Beware of email scams’ – warns Edenvale SAPS

Four cases of fraud opened in one day

Captain Jean Olckers, spokesperson of the Edenvale SAPS, urged community members to exercise caution when receiving new banking information from suppliers or lawyers.

This comes after four cases of fraud were opened at the Edenvale Police Station on August 22.

Three of the four cases were opened after community members received emails from alleged suppliers who provided new banking information to the victims.

Olckers said the fourth fraud case was unrelated.

“Shortly after paying money into the new accounts, the victims received messages from their actual suppliers asking where the payments were,” said Olckers.

He said all three of the victims paid large sums of money.

Olckers said if community members do receive an email with new account information, they should verify the information.

“Businesses or community members should phone their supplier on their known number and just double check,” said Olckers.

In line with email scams, Olckers added that community members should also exercise caution when purchasing or selling online.

Community members should:

• Be hesitant to accept good offers.

• Never meet in unknown places.

• Verify all information.

• Avoid ‘get rich quick’ schemes.
