Gauteng Open hosted in Edenvale

EDENVALE - Two Bedfordview based lawn bowls teams recently won various categories in the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open Championship.

Two Bedfordview based lawn bowls teams recently won various categories in the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open Championship.

The provincial championship was hosted by Edenvale Bowling Club on July 22 and 23.

Belgravia Bowling Club from Bedfordview took home the titles of men’s fours and the men’s singles which was won by George Lotter.

Bedfordview Country Club‘s Colleen Piketh won the women’s singles category.

Ian McInnes, president of the Edenvale Bowling Club, said the tournament was well organised.

“The atmosphere among the players was good and I am glad everyone enjoyed our facilities over the weekend,” said McInnes during the Saturday semi-finals.

He highlighted that Edenvale was honoured to be the headquarters of the competition.

Angus Ramsay, the chairperson of the tournament committee, explained that because the tournament was hosted by the Ekurhuleni Bowls District, 24 venues in Ekurhuleni were used to host games.

Some of the local participating clubs were Edenvale, Belgravia, Bedfordview, Italian Club, Modderfontein and Jeppe Quondam.

Ramsay said overall the tournament boasted three weekends of good bowls. “The tournament was a huge success,” he said.

The Gauteng Open is one of South Africa’s largest single bowls tournament in the country.

Players of varying talent from across the province attend the championship to give it their all.

The five bowls districts of Gauteng, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, Gauteng North, Sables and Sedibeng came together for the championship.

Other results of the Gauteng Open were:

  •  Pretoria High School Old Boys Bowling Club won the women’s fours category.
  •  Pretoria Military Bowling Club won the men’s pairs category.
  •  Discovery Bowling Club won the women’s pairs category.
  •  Boksburg Bowling Club won the mixed pairs category.
