Shot dead after attacking cop with panga

The suspect was allegedly unhappy when municipal workers started cutting grass on a vacant stand which he claimed he owned.

A man was shot and killed after he attacked and injured a police officer with a panga and butcher’s knife.

The officer retaliated and shot the man, who died on the scene, said Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson Captain Andrè de Jager.

The incident took place in Kirkby Road on Monday morning.

De Jager said the police received a complaint from municipal workers about the suspect who was giving them a hard time while they were attempting to do their job.

“Municipal workers were cutting grass on an empty stand on Kirkby Road and the suspect would not allow them to work, saying it was his property. The workers could not continue in peace and the police were called to the scene to assist,” explained de Jager.

“Bedfordview officers attended to the complaint and on arrival were attacked with a panga and butcher’s knife. One officer sustained injuries to his head and left hand and was rushed to Milpark Hospital,” he said.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder and an inquest docket has been opened.
