Billie turned 93 years young on June 8. An avid bridge player, Billie still gives bridge lessons to other residents.

She has been a happy resident of the Rand Aid retirement village since 2009.

Born in Vereeniging in 1924, Billie was a teacher at a commercial college, where she taught shorthand and typing.

“I also have a degree in music (LTCL) from the Trinity College of London,” said Billie.

In her younger years she played golf, switching to bowls later in life.

She was a member of the Houghton Bowling Club.

“At the age of 80 I tried my hand at painting and have some paintings proudly on display in my cottage,” she said.

She attributed her good health to healthy eating, keeping occupied and being positive.

“A pessimist won’t buy a green banana because he might not be around to enjoy it, but an optimist will buy the green fruit and in a few days’ time will happily tuck in,” said Billie.

He husband Sokkie died nine years ago.

Billie has three daughters – two in Canada and one in South Africa – eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The birthday girl celebrated her special day at a tea for 22 friends.

Served with pride was an array of tarts and cakes all specially baked by Billie.

A birthday dinner was then hosted by her daughter, with 16 loved ones happily seated around the table.
