Artist to present pastel-painting demonstration in Edenvale

His probing eye transforms his portraits into intimate insights of character and personality.

Full-time fine artist and art teacher Sam Maduna will do a pastel-painting demonstration on May 20.

The demonstration will be held at the Edenvale Community Centre.

Sam Maduna was born in Alexandra but now lives and works in his studio in Ennerdale.

At a young age he was encouraged by his mother to follow his artistic passions.

Largely self-taught, Sam has taken every opportunity to attend art workshops to develop his skills.

Pursuing art as a hobby, he received guidance from Steven Sack and Matsemela Manaka at The Institute of Art at Funda Centre.

Sam realised he was doing something right in 1987 when David Koloane selected his work for an exhibition with Mpolokeng and Alfie Barnett at the Federated Union of Black Arts Gallery in Newtown, Johannesburg.

Between 1988 and 2000 Sam worked as a commercial artist before deciding to become a full-time artist.

Since then he has exhibited widely and his work can be found in several significant collections.

He has been commissioned to provide work for book publishers, the film industry and corporate clients.

Sam draws on his life experience to create his art.

The energy and movement in his vibrant pastel paintings comes from his love of jazz, while the emotion and stillness of his portraits and figures have their roots in his mother’s life.

His probing eye transforms his portraits into intimate insights into character and personality.

His acute understanding of colour relationships is manipulated to full effect to enhance the shared emotional reaction between the artist and his subject.

To watch the demonstration, join the Paint and Palette Group at the Edenvale Community Centre.

The demonstration begins at 1.30pm for 2pm.

Entrance fee is R50 for visitors and R20 for members. The fee will include refreshments.
